王渊源：在莆田的木兰山下
At the foot of Mulan Mountain
in Putian,
有一条木兰溪。
there is a stream called
the Mulan River.
九百多年前，
More than 900 years ago,
这里因为受海潮的影响
due to the impact of
sea tides,
河水时常泛滥。
floods occurred frequently
along the river.
所以勤劳智慧的莆田人
So the hardworking and intelligent
people of Putian
就在木兰溪上建造了木兰陂。
built the Mulanbei Reservoir
on the Mulan River.
韩佳： 这木兰陂啊
The Mulanbei Reservoir
建于北宋年间。
was built during the Northern
Song Dynasty.
是一座集引、蓄、灌、排、挡
It was a large multifunctional water
control project capable of
等多种功能于一体的大型水利工程。
water diversion, storage, irrigation,
flood drainage and tide stoppage.
那我们现在所在的地方呢，
The place where we are
就是木兰陂的主体工程部分。
is the main part of the water
control project.
这部分啊是一个水坝。
This part is a dam.
这个水坝在汛期的时候呢
During flood seasons,
可以排洪。
this dam can drain the
flooding water.
在干旱的时候呢又可以蓄水。
And it can store water during
drought seasons.
等遇到涨潮的时候呢，
When the tide rises,
也可以阻挡海潮。
it can block the sea tide.
王渊源：你刚才说了主体工程。
You just described the principal
part of the project.
那我就说说辅助设施吧。
Let me talk about its
auxiliary facilities.
第一个辅助设施，
The first auxiliary facilities
就是沿溪筑的堤坝。

sides of the stream.
它可以防止水土的流失。

第二个辅助设施
And the second auxiliary facilities
就是南北纵横交错的水渠，
are the crisscrossing canals
可以起到灌溉下游的作用。

韩佳： 这么大型的工程啊
This huge project
直到现在
has continued
还在造福着莆田的人们。

王渊源：“造福”是什么意思呀？
What does "zaofu" mean?
韩佳： “造福”是个动词啊。
"Zaofu" is a verb.
就是指可以给人带来幸福。
It means to bring benefit
to or to benefit.
王渊源：“造福”就是指可以给人带来幸福。
So "zaofu" means to bring benefit

那我们可以说造福后代，

Speaking of Mulanbei,
首先呢就要提到钱四娘了。

尝试在木兰溪上拦河筑坝的人。

韩佳： 对呀。据历史记载呢，
Yes. According to historical records,
钱四娘为了治理木兰溪上的洪水，
Qian Siniang raised money in
order to build the dam
便筹集资金，在这里修建河坝。
to bring under control the
flooding river.
可是，由于当时选址不当，
But due to a wrong location
for the dam,
尽管她用尽了所有的家产，
she failed to build it
最终啊还是没有修建成。
even though she used up
all her family assets.
王渊源：哎。虽然没有修成，
Oh. Although she failed,
但她勇于尝试的精神
her pioneering spirit
很值得人们尊敬。
is worthy of respect and admiration.
韩佳： 没错儿。后来呢，
Absolutely true. Later,
人们就吸取了钱四娘失败的教训，
people drew a lesson from
Qian Siniang's failure
选择在溪水广阔平缓的地方修建水坝。
and chose to build the dam at a wider
and flatter section of the river.
经过八年的奋战呢，
After eight years of hard work,
木兰陂终于建成了。

These arhats and Buddha images
罗汉、佛像呢，

都是人们研究南宋建筑
