慧慧：More fun than being president比当总统更带劲，还要天天打棒球，真是不可思议。我倒想知道这传说中的棒球到底是怎么个玩法啊？
Nathan：好啊，那我们就从pitcher and batter说起吧
[板——Pitcher投手]
Pitcher (hurler)—it’s the player on the fielding side who stands on the mound and throws the ball in the direction of the batter, attempting to cause the batter to make an out.
场上的投手是防守一方的队员on the fielding side，他站在棒球场中间的投手区土墩mound，投手向击球手的方向投球in the direction of the batter, 试图造成击球手出局make an out。
Home run，在棒球里指的就是本垒打，也可以叫做homer。它是指a hit that enables the batter to round all the bases, reach home plate, and score a run.也就是能使击球手跑完所有垒位最后达到本垒得到1分的一击。多数的本垒击球都会hit outside the ballpark击出棒球场外，当然例外的情况也是会有的。在美国的major-league职棒联盟中的第一位home run king本垒王就是National league 全国联盟的George Hall,他在1876年为费城打出了五个本垒打。
打出本垒打对于batter击球手来说是wonderful，但对于pitcher投手来说通常就是走了背运。但是奥克兰A队的投手Catfish Hunter在一场球中输了两个home run之后，开玩笑的说，我有一些朋友从加州北部来到这里，他们从没有见过本垒打，so I gave them a couple所以我这回一次给他们一对。
除了在棒球运动中，home run有时也会出现在football橄榄球和basketball篮球中，特指a spectacular scoring play一个特别的进球，比如说橄榄球里面的a long touchdown pass in the former锋线上的一个触地得分的长传，或者篮球里面的a three points field goal in the latter后场的一个三分投篮。
从20世纪后半叶开始，home run又发展了它的一些引申含义，比如在securities business证券业里面，它的含义就是doubling one’s money on an investment在一次投资中赚了双倍的钱，就像买一支股票，5块买进10块卖出就可说是making a home run。

The strike zone好球区说的就是投手投球的目标范围，它是指home plate本垒板上方的立体空间，高度以batter击球手击球时自然站立的姿势为标准，整个球体要低于击球员的腋部armpits，高于膝部上沿the top of the player’s knees。投手投出的球，在落地前进入好球区的任何部分，都判为“好球”strike。
在棒垒球比赛中，裁判the umpire在比赛中拥有绝对的权威，但不可否认的是，有的时候判罚是有争议的，甚至是错误的。1996年举行的第26届亚特兰大奥运会的女子垒球比赛的决赛是在中国队和美国队之间展开的。比赛进行到第三局时，作为进攻方的中国队从第三垒跑回本垒home plate，几乎是在球手触垒的同时，美国队的球手接到球。棒垒球比赛中很容易出现这种情况，当时裁判判罚为美国队先接到球。同样是在第三局the third inning，在美国队进攻at the bat的时候，出现了一个有争议的本垒打。当时，美国队已经有一名球手在垒上，如果打出本垒打将得到2分。
