Constitution: The Mar。 29, 1987, Constitution, the nation's 23rd since independence, was repudiated by Gen。 Henri Namphy in 1988。 It was restored in 1990 by then-President Ertha Pascal-Trouillot and was loosely adhered to after the September 1991 coup。 The Constitution sanctions Creole as the nation's official language in addition to French; prohibits laws against the practice of voodoo; bans Duvalierists from running for office for a period of 10 years; and advocates the rights of education, a fair wage, and decent housing。
Location: Haiti occupies the western part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (with the Dominican Republic occupying the eastern portion) and includes several smaller offshore islands。 The Bahamas lie to the north and northwest, while Cuba and Jamaica are located to the west。
